Pregnancy and Postnatal Care

The Mossman Maternity Service offers care for women before and after birth. This includes antenatal clinics, pathology, screening tests, education, and postnatal care.

Women have the option to birth their babies at Mareeba Hospital or Cairns Hospital. Your midwife will explain these options. Your midwife will liaise closely with the hospital of your choice.

How to refer to Mossman Hospital Maternity Service

You can ask your doctor to refer you to the Mossman Maternity Service when you confirm your pregnancy.

You can also book in yourself to the Mossman Maternity Service by calling 07 4084 1253 or 0437 791 687.

It is recommended that you book in as early as possible in your pregnancy.

Specialist care with obstetric team at Cairns Hospital

Most women have normal, uncomplicated pregnancies and births. But some women may may need to see an obstetrician for some medical or pregnancy conditions.

An obstetrician who is a doctor who specialises in care during pregnancy, labour and after birth.

If you do need to see an obstetrician, the Mossman Hospital midwives will offer your antenatal and postnatal care in consultation with the Cairns Hospital obstetric team.

You may need to be referred to a specialist obstetrician if you have:

  • a complicated medical history
  • had a previous difficult pregnancy needing specialist care
  • a pregnancy that isn't progressing normally
  • a multiple pregnancy such as twins.

Childbirth Education Classes

We offer childbirth education classes on a Wednesday evening from 6 pm to 8 pm over a 5 week period. Bookings are essential. Contact Mossman midwives on 07 4084 1253 or 0437 791 687.

Our classes are also available if you're giving birth at Cairns Hospital, Mareeba Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital.

Birthing options

You have the option to have your baby at either:

Water immersion

You may be offered water immersion for labour and birth if appropriate.

Special Care Nursery

If your baby is sick or premature you may need specialist care after birth. If this happens, your baby may need to be admitted to the Special Care Baby Nursery at Cairns Hospital or the Neonatal Unit at Townsville Hospital.

When you're in labour

As soon as you think you are in labour, contact your birthing hospital and they'll tell you what to do next.

If you have an emergency call triple zero (000).

After you have your baby

We can help support you after you have your baby and go home. Call the Mossman Midwives (07 4084 1253 or 0437 791 687) when you leave hospital so we can arrange to visit you.

We'll provide care for 6 weeks. After that you'll be referred to your GP or local child health nurse.
