Atherton is an 80-minute drive from Cairns, is home to 7300 people and is popular for its gourmet food and wine, bird watching, unique wildlife, rainforests and waterfall walks. It is a great spot for many outdoor activities such as hiking and bushwalking, mountain biking and a variety of water sports.
Mareeba is approximately a 1hour drive from Cairns and home to approximately 10,500 people. Mareeba has a multicultural heritage with beautiful fresh produce, scenic mountain bike riding, bird watching, various wineries, several coffee plantations and an easy scenic drive away to other equally beautiful towns on the Atherton Tablelands.
Mareeba attractions include the Heritage Museum, Granite Gorge Nature Park, Mareeba Tropical Savannah and Wetland Reserve. There is also hot air ballooning, Warbirds Adventure Aviation Museum and the Mareeba Rodeo.
