A larger, more peaceful space for palliative care patients and their loved ones is now available at Mareeba Hospital.

The recently completed $425,000 refurbishment involved moving the hospital’s palliative care room to a more discrete area with garden views, a dedicated ensuite, kitchenette and lounge.

This new palliative care room provides a space for patients and families that is more private and peaceful while receiving end-of-life care.

The room was designed to comfortably accommodate a greater number of friends and family who wish to spend time with their loved one. It is focused on providing a calming environment for our patient, away from the traditional noises and busyness that hospitals create caring for multiple patients.

Director of Nursing and Facility Manager Michelle Bombardieri said an average of five to six patients accessed the Mareeba palliative care service each month, and the upgrades would allow clinicians to continue to offer quality care to patients and their families closer to home.

'We are always thanked by the local community for the family-centered service we provide,' she said.
